Buying furniture well is mostly a sequencing problem. Decide the big things first, ask the right questions, and measure the route in. Here is the order that works.

Decide what the room needs before you shop

The most expensive mistake in furniture shopping is buying in the wrong order. People buy the piece they fell in love with first, then spend a year trying to make everything else agree with it.

Work out the big decisions first: the largest piece, the floor covering and the wall colour. Everything else is easier once those three are settled, because they set the proportion and the palette that the rest has to live with.

Showroom or online

Go in person for anything your body touches. Seat height, cushion density, how a drawer runs and what a fabric actually feels like do not survive a product photograph.

Buy online with more confidence for lighting, rugs, storage, paint and decoration, where the risk is mostly colour and the fix is usually cheap.

The questions that save you money

  • Is this the price including VAT and delivery? Ask plainly, because quoted prices vary in what they include.
  • Is it in stock, or made to order? Made to order can mean weeks. Find out before you plan around it.
  • Does delivery include carrying it up? A ground floor delivery to a fourth floor flat is a problem you want to discover now.
  • What are the exact dimensions? Including depth with the back cushions in place, and the diagonal, which is what actually matters at a stairwell turn.
  • What is the warranty, and on what? Frames, mechanisms and fabric are often covered for different periods.
  • What happens if it does not fit? Agree this before payment.

Measure the route, not just the room

Furniture that fits the room perfectly and cannot get into it is a surprisingly common and expensive outcome. Measure the narrowest point of the journey: the building entrance, the lift car and its door, the stairwell turn, your front door, and any hallway corner.

For a sofa, the number that matters is usually the diagonal depth rather than the length, because that is what determines whether it can be turned through a doorway.

The retailers in Ouda's catalogue

Ouda builds its designs from products offered by partner retailers in Lebanon, so a piece that appears in a design maps to a shop you can contact rather than something you cannot buy here. The current partners are:

  • Electro Sakr
  • Societe Sakr
  • Wood And Gas
  • Solet Tapis
  • Panda Boutique
  • Amazona Paints
  • Colortek
  • Matta Gallery
  • Al Moustawda3
  • Abed Tahan

Ouda is an intermediary, not the seller. You deal with the retailer directly, on their terms, and they set the final price, delivery and warranty.

A sensible order of operations

  • Photograph the room and settle on a direction before you visit anywhere.
  • Shortlist two or three pieces for the big item rather than twenty.
  • Tape the footprint of your favourite on the floor and live with it for two days.
  • Call ahead to confirm the piece is in the showroom before travelling.
  • Confirm price, lead time and delivery in writing, then buy.

Common questions

Should I buy furniture online or in a showroom?

For anything you will sit on, lie on or touch daily, go and feel it. Seat depth, cushion firmness and the real colour of a fabric are almost impossible to judge from a photograph. For storage, lighting and decoration, buying online is lower risk.

What should I confirm before paying?

Price, availability, lead time, delivery charge, whether delivery includes carrying it upstairs, assembly, warranty terms and the returns policy. Get the lead time in writing if the piece is made to order.

Which retailers does Ouda work with?

Ouda's catalogue is built with ten retail partners in Lebanon: Electro Sakr, Societe Sakr, Wood And Gas, Solet Tapis, Panda Boutique, Amazona Paints, Colortek, Matta Gallery, Al Moustawda3 and Abed Tahan. The list keeps growing.
